You know what basically killed the quicksand trope? The moon landings. The quicksand trope is used far less commonly these days. Look up famous quicksand scenes from cinematic history and it readily becomes apparent that a sexually desirable woman flailing about and pleading in quicksand is a common male saviour fantasy, which is one thing, but I suspect it’s also a ‘trapping and dispatching with women’ fantasy. There’s a disturbing misogyny behind many of the live action quicksand scenes of the 20th century. Regardless of quicksand’s cultural status today, impressionable audiences who grew up during its heyday, have given birth to an aging community of quicksand fetishists that re-create versions of our favorite quicksand films with an erotic twist. It has since disappeared from the mainstream psyche. There is a VICE documentary about quicksand fetishists: Quicksand FetishĪt the height of its popularity quicksand appeared in one out of 35 Hollywood films. Quicksand was probably the number-one hazard faced by silver-screen adventurers, followed by decaying rope bridges and giant clams that could hold a diver underwater. Unless there’s a vine to grab a hold of, he or she disappears without a trace (except maybe a hat floating sadly on the surface). The unlucky victim starts sinking down into the muck struggling only makes it worse. It used to be a standard trope in action movies, although you don’t see it much these days: a patch of apparently solid ground in the jungle that, when stepped on, turns out to have the consistency of cold oatmeal. However the popularity of the old quicksand trope suggested quicksand was a disproportionate hazard, when I should have been warned instead about burying myself too deep in sand holes: Though nowhere near as common as drownings, children dying in sand still happens. My high school friend’s older brother suffocated to death under a collapsed sandcastle on Nelson’s Tahunanui Beach in the 1970s at the age of nine. Quicksand warning at Tasmanian beach - but expert says threat is minimal, ABC News (Australia) A quick-thinking dog owner has described the moment she got caught in quicksand while trying to rescue her toy poodle at a beach in southern Tasmania as akin to the infamous swamp scene in the 1984 film The NeverEnding Story. “There wasn’t any suction stopping me from getting out but it felt like there was nothing stable for me to stand on”. To make it worse, he did not point people toward the sources that would have actually allowed people to check where he was getting this information. As polished as it seems, it is gilded on the outside but rotten at the core. (By the way, that Galdr nonsense of just making rune noises that sounds like mooing is complete hogwash and I will debunk it on another occasion because it has obscured the reality of what Galdr actually is, essentially any vocalized incantation.) The issue with this is that none of it had any basis in history it was entirely falsified and made up. If you were to crack open his book Futhark, you would find a “polished” system with all kinds of information telling you how to use the runes, how to interpret the runes, how to do runic standing stances like yoga, and even how to mumble out some runic “galdr” which amounted to noise making. He put a polish onto the system of runes he was trying to popularize that was built up through falsification of information or hiding his methodology. Furthermore, he may have been an academic but his esoteric works are anything but academic. But he is also a racist and a white nationalist and has an unhealthy obsession with the Nazis this flavored a lot of his work. He was deep in the Troth, he was writing books, he was “academic”, he was steering a lot of things on the esoteric side of studies for decades. Thorsson/Flowers is one of those early influential personalities that had his hands in a lot of pies. For example, one of the biggest names in runes is Edred Thorsson otherwise known as Stephen Flowers. It is also however due to racists steering people incorrectly for their own motivations. Partly this tendency is due to the area of Germanic studies becoming highly taboo due to the post-WWII period associating it with Nazism and it is also partly due to a lack of reliable scholarship when the pagan community needed it so the pagan community turned to earlier work from the racist past. The prevalence of the Elder Futhark system is primarily grounded in the work of the earliest, and indeed racist, heathens who were trying to sell people on the concept. Why are these Norse Heathens using the Elder Futhark that was not used by the culture they are patterning their religion on and that doesn’t fit the language or the culture when they have access to the system of runes that they actually did use? The answer is not actually very simple and is hard to swallow in some cases. The Vikings utilized instead the Younger Futhark, a set of sixteen runes that actually fit their language. Yet despite the majority of heathens being Norse heathens, the vast majority of heathens who use the runes utilize the Elder Futhark, a set of twenty four runes used and discarded hundreds of years before the Vikings. There is not really a good reason for this except for prevalence of the imagery in popular literature, culture, and mythology. The vast majority of heathens are Norse heathens that are focused on the Viking age right before the era of conversion. So new or old, this is for you.įirst, there are some glaring inconsistencies to examine. I am also intending this to be a brief introduction to the Runes. You are likely to find your thoughts and feelings and opinions challenged, that is the point. I am bound to ruffle some feathers, but all I am truly trying to achieve is to get you to think about some of these things so just stick with me and keep an open mind. Furthermore, the runes like heathenry in general do have a racism issue. Those thoughts for many of us have become set and now here I come in the 11 th hour trying to upend your thoughts and feelings. Let me put it like this, the runes suffer from the same issue as any part of religious ideology in that once you have formed your opinions on them they are very difficult to adjust no matter how false they may actually be. The runes present a major problem in heathenry and paganism in general that most people are not even aware of. Considering that Great Britain was a developed marine nation, it used Greenwich Meridian to position own ships. The history of GMT started with the decision of the International Meridian Conference in 1884 to establish the prime meridian which would denote the international standard of time. Nevertheless, same as for GMT, the primary purpose of UTC is to denote the universal time zone in relation to others. To calculate the UTC time, the atomic clocks with frequency cycles are used to display the accurate measurements of time. UTC differs from GMT due to 24-hour system, which starts counting from midnight. Also, considering that each day requires the same interval, the pendulum clocks at the observatory was the perfect mechanism to standardise time for the universal coordination.Ĭoordinated Universal Time (UTC) came to replace GMT with the more accurate and scientific measurements of time 1.Īlthough the abbreviation does not match the term, it was used as a compromise for the translation from European languages. The term “mean” indicates the average time the clocks need to pass through the solar day. The name derives from the place where the solar time was standardised for everyone: it was established at The Royal Observatory Greenwich. The abbreviation of GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time. Nevertheless, both of these time standards are widely used in the world for a similar purpose of time coordination. Although UTC and GMT indicate the same time, UTC is based on the more precise mechanism of time measurement. In particular, the concept of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) was designed to provide a more accurate timekeeping system. The advancement of telecommunication technologies influenced the creation of an even more precise system of time identification. The primary difference remains to be the fact that GMT is the denomination of a timezone, while UTC is the title of the time standard. Therefore, the difference in time for other countries is indicated either by adding or subtracting hours from GMT time. The implementation of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) was the first step to determine the time zone of other countries in regard to GMT+0. Especially, it was vital to have a standardised time zone for communication and military coordinations. With the globalisation and evolution of international relationships, the need for universal time identification has occurred. Walmart, however, does not charge sellers a monthly fee. By Jake Schwarzbaum Walmart Marketplace: How to Get Started Selling on Walmart So now you've got the ability to launch any app by clicking Launchpad. Given its similarity to Launchpad I suggest moving it all the way to the left putting it next to Launchpad. But, like with Launchpad, you can also Click and Hold or Control Click and it will bring up a list of all the different sections of System Settings. You can simply click it to launch System Settings. Now System Settings should be in the Dock by default. If you have removed it you can always go back to the Applications folder and find it there and drag it back in. For that reason alone you should leave Launchpad in the Dock even if you don't use it that often. So, anything you've removed here can easily be accessed through Launchpad. You can click and hold or Control Click and it brings up a list of all of your apps. You don't actually have to click and launch Launchpad like that. Now for the apps that you've decided to remove remember that you can always access them using Launchpad here. Once you've added any applications that you want take the time to organize the Dock and move the items, left and right, to get them in the order you like. Then drag it down and put it in a position that makes sense for you. Go through this list and see if there is something that you use all the time that is not in the Dock. Now you're going to see all of your different apps. The easiest way to do that is go to the Finder and create a new Finder window and then go to Applications. Next, you're going to want to add the apps that you do actually use all the time. So do this specifically based on what you use and don't use. Your choices are going to be different than anybody else's. Then remove all of the different apps that you may not want. You can get rid of them by clicking and dragging up until you see the Remove indicator there. It just means they are not listed here to be able to run them quickly. Remember just getting them out of the Dock doesn't mean you can't run them. Chances are you don't use all of these on a regular basis. Here's the default set of apps in macOS Ventura 13.1. The first thing to do is to maybe get rid of apps that you really don't use. But how useful it is depends on whether you take the time to clean it up and customize it for your use.
